Mary Barra, chief executive officer of General Motors, will begin a two-year term as head of the Business Roundtable in January.

General Motors Co. GM 0.15% Chief Executive Mary Barra has been appointed the next chairman of the Business Roundtable, a trade group representing U.S. business interests in Washington, D.C.
On Jan. 1, Ms. Barra will take over as chairman of the coalition of chief executives of some of the biggest U.S. companies. She will be the first woman to lead the Business Roundtable.
She succeeds Walmart Inc. CEO Doug McMillon, who will remain on the board when he completes his two-year term on Dec. 31.
“Her understanding of America’s workforce and vision for the future is the exact perspective the Roundtable needs as we continue to work with Congress and the administration on public policies for tomorrow,” Mr. McMillon said in a statement.
Previous leaders include Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Doug Oberhelman, then-CEO of Caterpillar Inc.
Ms. Barra, who joined the Business Roundtable in 2017, takes over as companies grapple with the economic disruption from the pandemic as well calls to address racial equity and justice.
In prepared remarks, Ms. Barra said she appreciated Mr. McMillion’s leadership through such challenges during his tenure.
Business Roundtable President and Chief Executive Joshua Bolten said that as chairman of the education and workforce committee, Ms. Barra had engaged CEOs and policy makers on key policies and initiatives to prepare American workers.
The daughter of a Pontiac die-maker, Ms. Barra grew up steeped in Detroit’s car culture. She began her career with GM in 1980 as a General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division. She went on to hold a series of leadership jobs and was product chief when she was tapped to lead GM, making her the first woman to run a major global auto maker.
