BIG RAPIDS — Ever since she was a young girl following her mom’s every move in the kitchen, Kayla Detzler had aspirations to bake treats of her own one day.

As she grew up and started kneading dough on her own, Detzler always tried to replicate the same dishes that her mom and grandmother had made famous within her family.

Perfecting the recipes to the best of her ability, she soon had the desire to branch out and bake her own treats.

After making cake pops for a cousin’s birthday party and supplying desserts for a baby shower not long after, Detzler started receiving plenty of positive feedback from friends and family.

This soon evolved into baking treats for her friends and family, which ultimately brought her to start her own home business: Confections by Kayla.

“I was just doing cake pops at first, then I started watching YouTube and TikTok videos, and I would just look at them and try to come up with my own thing,” Detzler said. “Sometimes, I would just try to do the same thing.”

Over time, Detzler’s skills have sharpened and her confidence in the kitchen has grown.

Her clientele has steadily grown since launching her business less than four months ago.

“I’m still new to it all; it’s just something that I really like to do,” Detzler said. “Once I found out I could maybe make a business out of this, it was super exciting. It’s been fun.”

Detzler’s primary goal in crafting her desserts is letting the customer know everything that comes from her kitchen is a homemade product.

“I might as well make (items) from scratch, because that’s what I grew up on,” Detzler said. “It just makes it more unique.”

For the time being, Detzler is happy to run her business right out of her own kitchen, but she would eventually like to open a storefront somewhere in Big Rapids.

Having just learned how to make edible glitter and edible images to put on cakes, she feels she can stand out by providing those special services.

Detzler added that she believes downtown Big Rapids is in need of another locally owned small business and bakery.

“That’s definitely a plan,” Detzler said. “I was thinking, sometime in the near future, rent out a little spot in Big Rapids and just sell that kind of stuff.”
